UMA x Santonio Echols W3rkshop

Saturday, September 5, 2026 | 1:00–3:30 PM EDT

The Underground Music Academy presents a rare debut screening of scenes from a documentary in progress that explores the life and legacy of pioneering Detroit techno artist Santonio Echols. This work in progress was produced by UMA, filmed by Sidd Finch and edited by Rocky Ray.

Santonio Echols has spent decades shaping the sound that would come to define Detroit techno, his influence woven into the city's musical DNA long before most of the world caught on. His work filled the soundtrack of a household on Detroit's east side, the four-on-the-floor rhythms and soulful grooves that would later become the foundation for a new generation carrying his name. Through this screening, audiences get a rare look into the artistry, history, and personal story behind one of the genre's foundational figures.

Following the screening, Santonio is joined by his sons, Santonio Echols Jr. and Manny Echols, for a moderated conversation, moderated by Tajh Morris (Turtle Bugg). Together they discuss growing up immersed in their father's music, finding their own paths as Manny (MannyWya) and Santonio Jr., and what it means to carry a family legacy forward into a new chapter of Detroit's musical history.

This workshop is open to all levels. No music background required, just an interest in Detroit's techno history and the family carrying it into its next chapter.

There is a small charge for this event. Registration required.

UMA x Roland 909 Day: 909 to 1000 TR Workshop ft. Kevin Saunderson

Saturday, September 12th, 2026 | 3:00–6:00 PM EDT

Roland brings 909 Day to Underground Music Academy in Detroit on Saturday, September 12 from 3–6pm EDT, for a hands-on session with Kevin Saunderson and Roland’s Dustin Good. As one third of the Belleville Three, Saunderson helped pioneer Detroit techno and was an early champion of the TR-909, using the machine as part of the sound that would carry the genre around the world. The workshop brings that history into the present, putting Saunderson behind the machine in the city where techno took shape.

The free session pairs the original TR-909 with the next-generation TR-1000, focusing on new 909-inspired drum engines, and walks attendees through sequencing, sound shaping, and performance technique. Creators can join the Roland Cloud Academy livestream for an interactive session or check in anytime on the YouTube stream.
