About

Respect the Architects is for artists who want to understand what it means to make something new when so much already seems to have happened. This course gives you an inside look at lateness as a creative condition, drawing on Edward Said's essay of a similar title, rather than a limitation. Over six weeks, you explore how artists across generations have kept making meaningful work in the face of information overload and the fraying of shared cultural narratives, and what it takes to hold a point of view when everything is available all the time. This is a course built around listening, perspective, and lineage, centered on live conversations with Detroit artists and cultural leaders whose leadership, boldness, and commitment to craft stand out across eras. Learn directly from Detroit's producers and cultural leaders, both young and old, and hear firsthand how lasting work is built and how different generations navigate the tension between tradition and reinvention. Course Details: Instructor: Ryan Christopher Clarke Duration: 6 Weeks Learning Outcomes: Understand the art of adaptation and survival inside the Black musical tradition Identify local strategies for living and triumphing over conditions with dignity Explore what it means to make something new when so much has already happened, using "late" work as a creative condition Learn directly from guest artists and cultural leaders, both young and old, and extract real-world insights Apply Detroit's history, sound, and spirit to your own creative process and develop a clearer artistic identity for long-term growth Course Level: Intermediate On Demand: Registered students will have access to this course throughout its six-week duration and for an additional six weeks following completion.
